"meson: fix .pc generation" dropped the target from pkgconfig.generate() to stop meson writing "Requires.private: libelf", and with the target it dropped the Libs line as well, since that is where meson got it from. meson has a switch for exactly this, and it is the kind of target rather than a keyword. docs/markdown/Pkgconfig-module.md, "Dependencies of generated pc files": Shared libraries (i.e. shared_library() and NOT library()) add only -lfoo into Libs: or Libs.private: but their dependencies are not pulled. This is because dependencies are only needed for static link. Other libraries (i.e. static_library() or library()) add -lfoo into Libs: ... and recursively add their dependencies into Libs.private: or Requires.private:. The code says the same: pkgconfig.py takes the "do not pull dependencies" branch on "isinstance(obj, build.SharedLibrary) and obj.shared_library_only", and interpreter.py's build_library() passes shared_library_only=False for library() on purpose, with a comment saying dependencies are meant to end up in Requires.private. That was briefly changed in April 2026 and reverted a week later (97802a56, "interpreter: revert shared_library_only=True for library()", Fixes: #15690), so it is settled behaviour rather than an oversight. So say shared_library() and hand the target back to pkgconfig.generate(). Both files then come out as they did before 2026-09-22: Libs: -L${libdir} -ldjdev64 Cflags: -I${includedir} and no Requires line. Checked on meson 1.12 against this tree. The one thing this gives up is -Ddefault_library=static: the libraries are now always shared. For a library that exists to be dlopen'd that looks like the right trade, but if a static build is wanted, the other branch does the same job by naming the libraries as plain strings.
